The Purvis Tornadoes will face off against the Northeast Jones Tigers at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The two teams are strolling into their games after big wins in their previous games.
Purvis let Vancleave stack seven runs on them in the sixth inning on Saturday but luckily Purvis prevailed anyway. The Tornadoes were the clear victors by a 13-7 margin over the Bulldogs. With that victory, the Tornadoes brought their scoring average up to 6.3 runs per game.
Paxton Cooper made a splash no matter where he played. He didn't allow a single earned run over five innings pitched. Cooper was also big at the plate, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with one triple, two RBI, and one double. That double was his first of the season.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Nash Teater, who fired off two home runs and six RBI while going 2-for-5. Those two home runs gave him a new career-high. Beau Flatt was another key player, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with three runs and one stolen base.
Purvis lost a few balls and finished the game with two home runs. That's the most home runs they've managed all season.
Meanwhile, Northeast Jones came tearing into Saturday's contest with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 7 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They beat the War EaglesLady War Eagles by the very same score they won with in their prior game: 12-2.
Asher McBride spent all six innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered just two earned runs on five hits and racked up eight Ks. He also tossed two walks, which is notable because Northeast Jones is 2-1 when he allows at most two walks, but 7-8 otherwise.
On the hitting side, Carter Wiginton was incredible, going 1-for-2 with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Jax Sullins, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double.
The win got Northeast Jones back to even at 9-9. As for Purvis, their victory bumped their record up to 14-4.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Purvis has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.9 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Northeast Jones struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 8.1 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Purvis got the 'W' in their previous meeting back in April of 2023 against Northeast Jones by a conclusive 8-2 score. Will the Tornadoes repeat their success, or do the Tigers have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
