Cheyenne is 0-10 against Legacy since December of 2015 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Wednesday. The Cheyenne Desert Shields will be playing in front of their home fans against the Legacy Longhorns at 6:30 p.m. Both teams come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Cheyenne entered their tilt with Southeast Career Tech with two consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with three. Cheyenne narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past Southeast Career Tech 54-51. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory Cheyenne has posted yet this season.
Nita Franklin continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines, scoring 20 points along with eight rebounds and two blocks. That makes it five consecutive games in which she has scored at least a third of Cheyenne's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Elissa Sambo, who scored ten points along with three steals.
Meanwhile, Legacy put the finishing touches on their seventh blowout victory of the season on Friday. They blew past Valley 68-45. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest win Legacy has posted since December 27, 2023.
Legacy got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Jaleese Mckenzie out in front who scored 12 points along with six rebounds and four steals. Mckenzie is absolutely dominating the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. Ajalee Williams was another key contributor, scoring 14 points along with eight rebounds and four steals.
Cheyenne's victory bumped their record up to 5-7. As for Legacy, their win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 11-9.
Wednesday's contest is shaping up to be a scrappy matchup: Cheyenne have been smashing the glass this season, having only averaged 29.2 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Legacy struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 29.5 rebounds per game. Given Cheyenne's sizeable advantage in that area, Legacy will need to find a way to close that gap.
Cheyenne took a serious blow against Legacy in their previous meeting back in December of 2023, falling 64-26. Can Cheyenne avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
