The Evansville Memorial Tigers will square off against the Gibson Southern Titans at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Evansville Memorial comes in on nine and the Titans on 11.
Winning is just a little bit easier when you make five more threes than your opponent, a fact Evansville Memorial proved last Thursday. They strolled past Evansville Reitz with points to spare, taking the game 57-42.
Sophie Johnson was her usual excellent self, scoring 21 points along with eight rebounds and three blocks. The team also got some help courtesy of Myla Browning, who scored 14 points along with six assists and six rebounds.
Meanwhile, two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but only Gibson Southern walked away with it. They enjoyed a cozy 60-44 victory over the Wildcats on Tuesday. Given Gibson Southern's advantage in MaxPreps' Indiana basketball rankings (they are ranked 23rd, while the Wildcats are ranked 184th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Gibson Southern to victory, but perhaps none more so than Nola Ravellette, who scored nine points along with eight rebounds and five assists. Gabby Spink was another key contributor, scoring 20 points along with six assists and two steals.
Evansville Memorial has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 12 of their last 13 games, which provided a nice bump to their 21-3 record this season. As for Gibson Southern, their win bumped their record up to 20-4.
Friday's game is shaping up to be a masterclass in shooting: Evansville Memorial have been dynamite from deep this season, having made 45.7% of their threes per game. However, it's not like Gibson Southern struggles in that department as they've made 44.3% of their threes this season. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Evansville Memorial beat the Titans 66-58 in their previous meeting back in December of 2023. The rematch might be a little tougher for Evansville Memorial since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
