3A Region 1 recap Oct. 9, 2012
T.R. Miller extended the longest winning streak in 3A Region 1 this week by beating Cottage Hill Christian Academy, 55-3. The victory was the seventh in a row for the Tigers.
T.R. Miller took down the Warriors 55-3 last week, the largest margin of any game.
Excel's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. James Hudson threw for 79 and one touchdown and Rayford Dale had 60 yards receiving. On the ground Dekota Welker chipped in 97 yards. Trevor Tuberville helped Excel's passing attack out by catching one ball for 15 yards.
Lawrence Hyde made the biggest impact on defense this week as the Panthers fell to W.S. Neal. The 5-foot-10 junior recorded two fumbles.
5-foot-11 quarterback Chase Short of Straughn is the league leader in passing yards this season with 323. He has also thrown four touchdowns. On the ground, Excel's Welker has rushed for 619 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Justin Adkins. The Opp star has six catches for 162 yards.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when the Eagles take on Bayside Academy. W.S. Neal is in second place, while the Admirals are in fifth place.
There should be lots of points scored when the Tigers and Richard Anderson's team face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, Straughn comes in having scored 164 this season, while the Panthers have scored 114. Trent Taylor's team scored 17 points last week as it lost to Bayside Academy.
Jamie Riggs' team led 3A Region 1 in scoring this week after putting up 55 points on Cottage Hill Christian Academy.
