The Lowellville Rockets struggled with assists on Thursday (the Springfield Tigers had eight more) and sadly the final score reflected it. Lowellville took a 58-54 hit to the loss column at the hands of Springfield. While losing is never fun, Lowellville can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Ohio basketball rankings (they are ranked 584th, while Springfield is ranked 190th).
When it comes to explaining why Lowellville lost, one person who can't be blamed is Morgan Lewis. Despite the final result, she scored 19 points along with five rebounds and four steals. Lewis continues to roll, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Sydney Procick, who scored 12 points along with nine rebounds.
Leading Springfield to victory were Jameka Brungard and Ava Vecchione. Brungard dropped a double-double on 18 points and 16 rebounds, while Vecchione scored 23 points along with six steals. That makes it four consecutive games in which Brungard has scored at least 25% of Springfield's points. Another player making a difference was Mariana Tuscano, who scored nine points.
This is the second loss in a row for Lowellville and nudges their season record down to 2-4. As for Springfield, they have been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five games, which provided a nice bump to their 5-2 record this season.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Lowellville will take on Mineral Ridge at 6:15 p.m. on Monday. Mineral Ridge is currently enjoying a perfect season and no doubt want to keep things rolling. As for Springfield, they will head out on the road to face off against McKinley at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. McKinley is coming into the matchup on a four-game losing streak.
