Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in high school football. America's source for high school sports continues the tradition to close out the 2021 season by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence, in addition to local and state accolades.
Tyson Rostad of
Hamilton is the 2021 MaxPreps Montana High School Football Player of the Year. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound senior quarterback/defensive back led the Broncs to an 11-0 record and the Class A state championship.
In a 21-7 win in windy conditions over Laurel in the title game, Hamilton went to the ground and leaned on Rostad, who carried 36 times for 228 yards and three scores to lead Hamilton to its first state championship since 1998.
For the season, Rostad threw for nearly 2,300 yards and 27 TDs (against just two interceptions) while running for 788 yards and 18 more scores. Defensively, he recorded over 50 tackles and picked off three passes.
Rostad has committed to play next season for Montana.
Current BYU freshman offensive lineman Dylan Rollins of
Sentinel (Missoula) was the 2020 MaxPreps Montana Player of the Year after paving the way for a Spartan offense that averaged 45.2 points and 412.8 yards per game.
Each state's MaxPreps Player of the Year will be considered for inclusion in the MaxPreps All-America Team, which will be released in early January.
