Softball Recap: Southwest SD Extends Winning Streak to Five

Southwest SD barely beat Kearny the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Raiders blew past the Komets 16-6 on Wednesday. The result was nothing new for the Raiders, who have now won six matches by six runs or more so far this season.

Daniela Nieto made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out nine batters over six innings while giving up four earned (and two unearned) runs off six hits. Nieto was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with one triple and two RBI. That triple was her first of the season.

In other batting news, Aketzalli Rodriguez was a standout: she scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in four of her five plate appearances. Samantha Ramirez was another key player, going 2-for-5 with four RBI and one run.

The victory was the fifth in a row for Southwest SD, bringing their record up to 6-3. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 15.4 runs over those games. As for Kearny, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost five of their last six contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 3-9 record this season.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Southwest SD will take on Crawford at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Kearny, they will welcome La Jolla at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Vikings have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 16.23 runs per game on average), something the Komets will no doubt try to take advantage of.
