West Marion hasn't had much luck against Sumrall recently, but that could start to change on Saturday. The Trojans will head out on the road to face off against the Bobcats at 2:00 p.m. West Marion is coming into the match hot, having won their last three games.
West Marion's pitching crew heads into the contest hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Friday. They came out on top against St. Patrick by a score of 3-0.
Kolby Stringer made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been consistent : he hasn't given up more than one hit in eight consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one RBI.
In other pitching news, Sam Smith looked comfortable as he didn't allow a single earned run over four innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances.
Stringer wasn't the only one making solid contact as five players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Landon Holman, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base and one RBI. That stolen base marked the first that Holman snagged this season.
Meanwhile, Sumrall suffered their closest defeat since February 13th on Thursday. They fell just short of Forrest County Agricultural by a score of 15-13. The Bobcats' loss signaled the end of their five-game winning streak.
Drew Davis was cooking despite his team's loss, firing off two home runs, two stolen bases, and five RBI while going 3-for-5. Landon Hawkins was another key player, scoring a run and stealing three bases while getting on base in all five of his plate appearances.
West Marion's record is now 8-13. As for Sumrall, their defeat dropped their record down to 14-7.
Saturday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. West Marion has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .436. However, it's not like Sumrall struggles in that department as they've averaged .481. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
West Marion might still be hurting after the 15-5 loss they got from Sumrall in their previous meeting back in March. Can the Trojans avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
