2A-1 Region III District 10 recap Oct. 23, 2012
Newton extended the longest winning streak in 2A-1 Region III District 10 this week by beating Kountze, 64-10. The victory was the seventh in a row for the Eagles.
Anahuac moved up to 751 from 808 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Panthers were able to make move up by topping Warren 74-34.
Newton's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. D.J. DEAN threw for 132 and two touchdowns and KEYAUN SEASTRUNK had 62 yards receiving. On the ground KEVIN SHORTER chipped in 189 yards. ERIC VANPELT helped Newton's passing attack out by catching two balls for 41 yards.
The Eagles' DEAN and SHORTER have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. DEAN has thrown for 583 yards this season, while SHORTER, a 6-foot-1 receiver, has seven catches for 170 yards. Anahuac's Justin Artis leads the league in rushing yards with 1198.
SHORTER of the Newton is only 22 yards short of surpassing 1,000 rushing yards for the season. In 77 carries SHORTER has accumulated 978 yard this year.
A big matchup in 2A-1 Region III District 10 this week will be when East Chambers takes on the Lions. As it stands, the Buccaneers are in third, while Kountze is in second.
There should be lots of points scored when the Eagles and the Panthers face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, Newton comes in having scored 368 this season, while Anahuac has scored 187. The Eagles scored 64 points last week as they bested Tracey Franklin's team.
Newton took down the Lions 64-10 last week, the largest margin of any game. DEAN ran for 139 yards in the win.
