This season hasn't been kind to the Mattamuskeet Lakers, who are still winless after their seventh match. They were dealt a 49-12 defeat at the hands of Pungo Christian Academy on Thursday. Mattamuskeet was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 29-7.
Despite the loss, Mattamuskeet still got an impressive performance from Kensley Cox, who scored ten points along with eight rebounds and four steals. Cox is absolutely dominating the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was ANGIE MENDOZA, who scored two points along with five rebounds and two steals.
Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, Mattamuskeet struggled to work together and finished the game with only three assists. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as Pungo Christian Academy racked up 14 assists.
Pungo Christian Academy was led to victory by Alden Taylor and Allison Sawyer. Taylor dropped a double-double on 11 points and ten rebounds, while Sawyer dropped a double-double on 19 points and 18 rebounds. Taylor also posted two+ blocks for the first time this season. Julia Rouse was another key contributor, scoring five points along with three steals.
Mattamuskeet's loss was their 13th straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 0-7. As for Pungo Christian Academy, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven games, which provided a massive bump to their 11-7 record this season.
Mattamuskeet will be staying on the road on Friday to face off against Cape Hatteras at 6:00 p.m. on January 19th. As for Pungo Christian Academy, they will be playing in front of their home fans against New Bern Christian Academy at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully New Bern Christian Academy focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 16 on Thursday.
