On Tuesday, the Baker Hornets faced the Mary G. Montgomery Vikings in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Baker secured a 64-59 W over the Vikings. The win was nothing new for Baker as they're now sitting on four straight.
Baker got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Desmond Williams out in front who scored 13 points along with six assists and two steals. Derrick Florence lll was another key contributor, scoring 17 points along with five rebounds and two steals.
Despite the loss, Mary G. Montgomery saw an underclassman step up: Dj Broughton scored 20 points along with five rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Zion Hunter, who almost dropped a double-double on 11 points and nine rebounds.
Even though they lost, Mary G. Montgomery smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Baker only pulled down two offensive rebounds.
Baker's win was their sixth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 20-7. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 70.2 points per game. As for Mary G. Montgomery, their loss dropped their record down to 20-5.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Baker will face off against the Hurricanes at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Bryant will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Alabama Rankings (they are ranked 338th, while the Hornets are ranked 17th). As for Mary G. Montgomery, they will head out on the road to square off against the Warriors at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Davidson is coming into the matchup on a four-game losing streak.
