After having lost a blowout in their previous game against St. Joseph Academy, Borrego Springs was happy to have turned things around on Thursday. They breezed past the West Shores Wildcats to the tune of 75-30. The Rams might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won five games by 24 points or more this season.
Borrego Springs' win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Cameron Campbell, who rushed for 83 yards and one touchdown. Campbell showed off some serious burst, turning on the afterburners on one carry for 60 yards. Another player making a difference was Travis Asche, who rushed for 54 yards and a pair of TDs.
Borrego Springs didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Preston Sexton and Josef Rocha. Borrego Springs received some extra help from Maurico Rodriguez, whose fumble return for a touchdown made for one of the most unforgettable moments.
Special teams was a major factor in the game for Borrego Springs, racking up 21 points in total. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Rocha, who ran a kickoff back for a touchdown.
Despite the loss, West Shores still got an impressive performance from Marcos Salas, who rushed for 363 yards and two scores on only 12 carries, and also threw for 47 yards and one touchdown. Salas' rushing production has been exceptional recently as that marked his fourth straight game with at least 103 rushing yards.
Borrego Springs' victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 6-1. Those road wins came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 12.7 points on average over those games. As for West Shores, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 2-7.
Looking ahead, Borrego Springs will host Francis Parker at 7:00 p.m. on the 31st. The Rams will be up against the Lancers' rather soft defense (which has allowed 32 points per contest), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance. As for West Shores, they will challenge Julian at 3:30 p.m. on Friday.
