The Lytle Pirates have been a dominant force so far, but they're in the middle of a mini-slump at the moment. The New Year welcomed they with a 73-38 whooping from San Marcos on Tuesday. While losing is never fun, Lytle can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 327th, while San Marcos is ranked 81st).
Despite the loss, Lytle still got an impressive performance from Calyssa Sevier, who scored 17 points along with three steals. Sevier scored a full 44.7% of Lytle's points, the 23rd time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Katara Whitfield, who scored 11 points along with five rebounds.
Lytle's defeat ended a 14-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 16-7. As for San Marcos, the victory (which was their seventh in a row) raised their record to 16-4.
Lytle will be playing in front of their home fans against Natalia at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Natalia has now lost seven straight, and the team is hunting for their first win since December 9. San Marcos is on the road again on Friday and play against New Braunfels at 7:00 p.m. on January 5th.
