The Port Charlotte Pirates had to endure a three-game losing streak, but that streak is no more. They greeted the New Year with with a 51-35 victory over Golden Gate. Given Port Charlotte's advantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 151st, while Golden Gate is ranked 485th), the result on Saturday wasn't entirely unexpected.
Golden Gate's loss came despite strong showings from Sam Powell and Orville Salomon. Powell scored 11 points along with seven rebounds, while Salomon scored five points. The match was Powell's 15th in a row with at least ten points.
Port Charlotte pushed their record up to 8-6 with that win, which was their sixth straight at home. As for Golden Gate, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 5-11.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Port Charlotte and Mariner will face off at 7:30 p.m. on January 9th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. As for Golden Gate, they will head out on the road to face off against Aubrey Rogers at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Aubrey Rogers focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 13 on Friday.
