Pomperaug is on a three-game streak of home wins, while Newtown is on a eight-game streak of away wins (dating back to last season): one of those streaks is about to end. The Pomperaug Panthers will take on the Newtown Nighthawks at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the pair posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.
Pomperaug can now show off four landslide victories after their most recent matchup on Friday. They claimed a resounding 34-6 victory over Stratford on the road. The win was just what Pomperaug needed coming off of a 43-22 defeat in their prior matchup.
Pomperaug had a senior duo take command as Cooper Simmons rushed for 135 yards and two touchdowns on only 15 carries and Carter Frank rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown on only seven carries.
Meanwhile, Newtown faced West Haven in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Newtown took a 41-31 hit to the loss column at the hands of West Haven on Friday.
J.j. Haddick put forth a good effort for the losing side as he rushed for 121 yards and three touchdowns. The team also got some help courtesy of Ayden Paulos, who gained 117 total yards.
Pomperaug's victory bumped their season record to 5-2 while Newtown's defeat dropped theirs to 6-1.
Pomperaug took a serious blow against Newtown when the teams last played back in September of 2022, falling 49-0. Thankfully for Pomperaug, Dylan Magazu (who rushed for 96 yards and two touchdowns on only 13 carries, and also threw for 72 yards and a touchdown) won't be suiting up this time.
