Watkins Memorial has gone 9-1 against Licking Heights recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Thursday. The Warriors will challenge the Hornets at 5:00 p.m. The last three games Watkins Memorial has played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.
On Wednesday, Watkins Memorial needed a bit of extra time to put away Newark Catholic. They had just enough and edged out the Green Wave 6-5. The Warriors haven't had any issues with the Green Wave recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive win against them.
Logan Grezlik tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run over six innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run any time he's pitched this season.
On the hitting side, Cam Burt and Jax Dotson did most of the damage at the plate: Burt got on base in all four of his plate appearances with one stolen base, while Dotson went a perfect 1-for-1 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Licking Heights had to endure an 11-game losing streak, but that streak is no more. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Johnstown-Monroe on Wednesday, sneaking past 6-5. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Hornets have posted since April 23, 2024.
Brady Pennington was a major factor no matter where he played. He pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. What's more, he posted three strikeouts, the most he's had since back in April of 2024. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-2 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
In other pitching news, Johnny Morgan looked comfortable as he didn't allow a single hit and allowed only two earned runs over four innings pitched.
Back at the plate, Maxim Fink was excellent, going 1-for-3 with two RBI and one run. Max Caldwell also deserves some recognition as he scored his first run of the season.
Watkins Memorial's win was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 7-4. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.8 runs on average over those games. As for Licking Heights, their win was their first in the conference, bumping their conference record up to 1-10 and their overall record up to 2-13.
Watkins Memorial beat Licking Heights 5-2 in their previous matchup back in April. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Warriors since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
