3A District 8 recap October 1, 2013
The biggest upset of the week belonged to Valliant, who defeated 198th ranked Heavener, 20-16.
Spiro was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from fourth to second in 3A District 8. Earlier in the week, the Bulldogs triumphed over Stigler 17-14.
Ty Mitchell made the biggest impact on defense this week as the Panthers lost to Spiro. The 5-foot-9 senior.
Seth Sandlin threw for 280 yards and 2 touchdowns. He went 21-45 with 2 interceptions.
Dakotah Cripps was the best running back in the league this week. In 18 carries, he ran for 112 yards as the Wolves fell to the Bulldogs. Teammate Dillan Stallings added to the ground attack by rushing for 34 yards.
Stigler's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Panthers feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Sandlin has thrown for 923 yards and 8 touchdowns this season, while Trace Jackson has 21 catches for 299 yards. Sandlin also leads the league in rushing with 470 yards.
Two of the top units in 3A District 8 will face off this week when Stigler takes on Eufaula. Chris Risenhoover's team's offense has recorded 110 points this season, making them No. 1 in the league, while the Ironheads have permitted only 61 on the year.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Valliant takes on Checotah. At the moment, Brett Jones' team is in seventh, while the Wildcats are in first.
The Bulldogs scaled the state rankings by moving to 217 from 246 this week, the biggest jump in the league. Valliant climbed the ranks as a result of besting Heavener 20-16.
