On the other side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to Newport's defensive line and their three sacks. Antonio Ross was especially locked on to Walnut Ridge's QB and sacked him twice. Ross is also on a roll when it comes to total tackles, as he's now made five or more in the last six games he's played. Another thorn in Walnut Ridge's side was Tyler Ridley, who forced a fumble and made ten total tackles (5.0 for loss).
The victory got Hoxie back to even at 4-4. As for Newport, their win bumped their record up to 6-2.
Hoxie took their victory against Newport in their previous meeting back in November of 2020 by a conclusive 48-28. The rematch might be a little tougher for Hoxie since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
