Guerin Catholic is on a seven-game streak of home wins (dating back to last season), while Cathedral is on a three-game streak of away wins: one of those streaks is about to end. The Guerin Catholic Golden Eagles will welcome the Cathedral Fighting Irish at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. One thing working in Guerin Catholic's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last six matches.
It was a Battle of the Birds when Guerin Catholic duked it out withHeritage Christian on Saturday. Guerin Catholic strolled past Heritage Christian with points to spare, taking the game 63-46. Given the Golden Eagles' advantage in MaxPreps' Indiana basketball rankings (they are ranked 18th, while the Eagles are ranked 158th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Guerin Catholic relied on the efforts of Bryson Cardinal, who posted 25 points and five rebounds, and Jake Grissom, who went 8 of 15 on his way to 22 points and five rebounds. That makes it five consecutive games in which Cardinal has scored at least a third of Guerin Catholic's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Ryne Paris, who had six points in addition to five rebounds and three steals.
Meanwhile, Cathedral scored the most points they've had this season on Saturday, but it wasn't enough. They were just a bucket shy of victory and fell 89-88 to Great Crossing. The Fighting Irish's loss signaled the end of their eight-game winning streak.
Guerin Catholic will need focus on slowing down Brady Koehler, one of several Cathedral players who made an impact when they last played. He went 7 of 13 on his way to 18 points along with five assists and five boards. The team also got some help courtesy of Aidan Hughes, who made all 6 shots he took to post 12 points and three steals.
Guerin Catholic is on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last nine contests, which provided a nice bump to their 12-2 record this season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 64.2 points per game. As for Cathedral, their defeat dropped their record down to 9-3.
Some high-performance offense is likely on the agenda as Guerin Catholic and Cathedral are some of the highest scoring teams in the league. Guerin Catholic hasn't had any problem running up the score this season, having averaged 62.1 points per game. However, it's not like Cathedral struggles in that department as they've been averaging 70.4 points. With both teams so easily able to put up points, the only question left is who can run the score up higher.
Guerin Catholic won a game that couldn't have been any closer when the teams last played back in January of 2024, slipping by Cathedral 48-47. Does Guerin Catholic have another victory up their sleeve, or will Cathedral turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
