After everything settled down and all the experts chimed in on the big, bigger and biggest winners of National Signing Day, why do I get the feeling one of the day’s best notes from Utah came from Tanner Hinds?

For all the hype of Jake Heaps at BYU and Utah’s pursuit of Bingham’s Ricky Heimuli and that eventual signing with Oregon, the announcement of Hinds going to FCS playoff team Weber State simply made the most sense.
Hinds was Utah’s best high school rusher, gaining almost 2,000 in leading Davis to the 5A championship game.
Running back was a priority for Weber State. The school's all-time leading rusher, Trevyn Smith, played his senior season for the Wildcats last season. The team's second-leading rusher, Bo Bolen, will soon serve an LDS Church mission.
Can someone say "perfect fit"?
Weber also signed Springville’s Alema Key, who can catch passes out of the backfield and helped Scott Mitchell’s Red Devils get to the 4A championship.
These may have not been the glamour signings, but sometimes things work out in the long run. Hey, Tony Romo went to Eastern Illinois. That worked out.
Other quick notes
* Utah State may not have won any big recruiting battles against BYU and Utah, but Gary Anderson didn’t exactly get his butt kicked, either. Eleven of his signees were in-state, and included name QBs Trevor Brown (Timpview) and Alex Hart (Jordan) as well as Pleasant Grove's Jason Fanaika and Cottonwood's Taani Fisilau. The folks are Logan are getting some respect in the state.
* Here’s my take on Heimuli. He’s going on his LDS after his freshman year, so he searched for a place with guaranteed playing time. Kyle Whittingham couldn’t promise that and probably lost him to Oregon. Props to Utah. You earn your playing time, kids.
* So what if BYU lost Dallas Lloyd to Stanford? Kid has the GPA for Stanford. Alex Kuresa from Mountain Crest came in to run the practice squad under Heaps.
* Another top Utah kid (Timpview DB Chris Badger) signs with … Notre Dame? Why not?
So they signed ‘em. Let’s see how they develop ‘em.
