Basketball Recap: Gabby Culp's Big Game Can't Quite Lead University over Sheridan

University was not able to break out of their rough patch on Wednesday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They took a 55-45 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Sheridan Blackhawks. The Trailblazers were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Blackhawks apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in February of 2023.

University lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Gabby Culp, who dropped a double-double on ten points and 11 rebounds. The dominant performance also gave Culp a new career-high in steals (three). Another player making a difference was Anyah Turley, who posted nine points and three steals.

Even though they lost, University smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in 12 consecutive matches.

Kenzie Garner continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines for Sheridan, dropping a double-double on 19 points and 11 boards. That makes it three consecutive games in which Garner has scored at least a third of Sheridan's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Brielle Garner, who had 12 points.

University's defeat dropped their record down to 7-9. As for Sheridan, the win (which was their 11th in a row) raised their record to 13-1.

University will square off against Covenant Christian at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday. Covenant Christian is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 53.4 points per game this season. As for Sheridan, they didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 63-33 victory against Tri-Central on the 10th.
