VIDEO: Smoky Hill's Obasanjo Sanni highlights against Westminster.
The Buffaloes finished 10-0 and captured the Metro 10 League title with a 35-28 victory over Westminster. It's the first league title for Smoky Hill since 1980 and the team's first postseason appearance since 2007, according to the Aurora Sentinel.
The team's strength of schedule was a big factor in RPI, and the Buffaloes landed the No. 17 seed. Smoky Hill visits
Regis Jesuit (Aurora) at 7 p.m. Friday, with the winner earning a visit to top-ranked Valor Christian next weekend.
So how did the Buffaloes get here? It started with longtime Bear Creek and Mullen coach Tom Thenell taking over a program that was 1-18 over the previous two seasons while competing in the Mt. Massive League. With leagues reshuffled, the Metro 10 was formed out of programs that had struggled in recent years, according to CHSAA. The league's two playoff teams, Smoky Hill and No. 24
Denver East, are a combined 18-2 – the Angels hadn't made the playoffs since 2015.
Smoky Hill's defense notched six shutouts this fall, utilizing 34 sacks and 21 turnovers to its advantage. Junior
Khari Upshaw has a team-high eight sacks, and sophomore
Micah Williams recorded six interceptions.
On the other side of the ball, junior
Obasanjo Sanni led a strong ground game with 1,839 yards and 17 touchdowns. A trio of quarterbacks combined to throw 22 touchdown passes to only four interceptions for an offense that averaged 36.3 points a game.
Regis Jesuit will provide a stiff challenge for the Buffaloes. The Raiders (6-4) overcame losses in four of their first five games, closing the season on a five-game winning streak.
The top eight seeds in 5A earned first-round byes and will host games next weekend.
Also beginning postseason play this weekend is 2A, 1A, 8-Man and 6-Man. Each of those classifications field 16-team brackets, with championship games set for Nov. 24. Class 5A will decide its championship Dec. 1, as will 4A and 3A – the latter two classifications have one more week remaining in the regular season.
