Columbia extended their winning streak to five on Friday, bumping them up to 6-3. They narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past the La Marque Cougars 35-33. That's more bragging rights for the Roughnecks, who also won the pair's last head-to-head.
Cade Thoe had another great game (as he tends to do), rushing for 129 yards and a pair of TDs while picking up 7.2 yards per carry, and also throwing for 137 yards and three touchdowns. Those 129 rushing yards gave him a new career-high.
As for La Marque, their loss ended a five-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 8-2. Despite 90 more yards than Columbia, the Cougars couldn't convert that extra yardage to scores.
La Marque's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Cory Hosea, who rushed for 142 yards and one score while picking up 7.9 yards per carry, and also picked up 72 receiving yards and one TD. Hosea got the majority of those receiving yards when he pulled down a pass and took off for a gain of 64 yards. Another player making a difference was Deuce Walker, who threw for 288 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 10.7 yards per attempt.
Looking ahead, Columbia will challenge Harmony School of Innovation at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Roughnecks will be up against the Mustangs' rather soft defense (which has allowed 36.56 points per game), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance. La Marque does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
