Chloe King made a splash while hitting and pitching. She struck out 13 batters over 6.1 innings while giving up four earned (and one unearned) runs off seven hits. She has been consistent : she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in seven consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. That home run marked the first that she launched this season.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Norah Clark, who scored three runs while going 4-for-4. Isa Barber was another key player, going 2-for-4 with one home run, two RBI, and one double.
Riverbend kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post 11 or more hits.
Meanwhile, Caroline fought the good fight in their extra-innings match against Spotsylvania on Thursday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Knights by a score of 5-4. The game marked the Cavaliers' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.
Like Riverbend, Caroline also got a great game from a two-way player: Jaidyn Tingen. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 13 batters over 7.2 innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off nine hits. Tingen was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while going 2-for-4.
In other batting news, Ava Anderson was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one double. Another player making a difference was Nya Howard, who scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-4.
Riverbend's record now sits at 5-3. As for Caroline, their defeat was their first of the season and makes their record 4-1.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Monday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Riverbend has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 10.6 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Caroline struggles in that department as they've been averaging 9 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
