After flying high against the Primero Bulldogs last Friday, the Sangre de Cristo Thunderbirds came back down to earth. The contest between Sangre de Cristo and the Tigers wasn't particularly close, with the Thunderbirds falling 38-24. It was the first time this season that Sangre de Cristo let down their fans at home.
Sangre de Cristo's loss on Tuesday came despite strong showings from Idahlia Garcia and Audrina Knorr. Garcia scored eight points along with six rebounds, while Knorr scored no points along with two steals. Knorr has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last five times she's played.
Del Norte's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Baylie Laymon, who scored 12 points along with five rebounds and three steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Laymon has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Kayleigh Haynie, who scored nine points along with six rebounds and five steals.
Sangre de Cristo's loss ended a 15-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 6-3. As for Del Norte, they have been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 6-5 record this season.
Sangre de Cristo will head out on the road to take on the Rams at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. Centennial has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games. As for Del Norte, they will look to defend their home court on Saturday against the Bobcats at 1:00 p.m.
