The United States Under-17 National Team received double-digit scoring efforts from seven different players Tuesday in a 132-64 drubbing of Egypt at the
FIBA World Championship in Hamburg, Germany.
The USA improved to 4-0 in the event and will face Serbia in the final game of group play Wednesday. Under the direction of head coach Don Showalter (Mid-Prairie High School, Iowa), the American squad is averaging 107.2 points per game and allowing just 68.2.
"Egypt played really hard, and this game was as important to us as any other game," Showalter said. "This morning we also had our best practice. I am proud of our guys."
Bradley Beal of Chaminade (St. Louis, Mo.) and Michael Gilchrist of St. Patrick (Elizabeth, N.J.) led the scoring charge with 18 points apiece. Justin Anderson (16 points), Chasson Randle (16), Marquis Teague (12), Adonis Thomas (11) and Andre Drummond (11) also finished in double figures.
The United States was credited for 36 assists on 43 field goals, including 10 by Quinn Cook – averaging 8.5 per game during the World Championship – and eight from Teague and Tony Wroten Jr.
Egypt was held to just six points in the second quarter and entered the third quarter trailing 76-22.
Quarterfinal play begins Friday and the United States has earned the top seed in Group A with a date against the No. 4 seed from Group B. Four teams are still alive for that spot.
