The Santa Maria Cougars fought the good fight in their overtime matchup against the La Villa Cardinals on Tuesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They took a 52-42 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Cardinals. Santa Maria was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as La Villa apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in January of 2022.
La Villa found their leader in underclassman Herlinda Rivera, who scored 24 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Rainee Cantu, who scored 14 points.
This is the second loss in a row for Santa Maria and nudges their season record down to 0-2. As for La Villa, their win bumped their record up to 1-3.
Santa Maria will head out on the road to face off against Raymondville at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Raymondville will be looking to keep their five-game home win streak alive. La Villa will take on Ben Bolt at 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday.
