Meanwhile, Mathis had already won four in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 11.8 runs) and they went ahead and made it five on Tuesday. They were the clear victors by a 12-2 margin over the Longhorns. The result was nothing new for the Pirates, who have now won seven games by six runs or more so far this season.
Alyssa Herrera made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 11 batters over five innings while giving up just two earned runs off seven hits (and only one walk). She has been consistent : she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in eight consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 3-for-4.
In other batting news, Mathis got a massive performance out of Lexi Rodriguez, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three doubles, two runs, and two RBI. Those three hits gave Rodriguez a new career-high. Charleen Hernandez was another key player, scoring a run while going 3-for-4.
Mathis pushed their record up to 11-6-1 with the win, which was their fifth straight at home. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.6 runs on average over those games. As for West Oso, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-17.
