After taking the lead in the fourth quarter,
St. Joseph (Santa Maria, Calif.) held on for a 22-7 victory over
Palma (Salinas, Calif.) on Saturday. The difference for the Knights was.
The Knights led 7-0 at halftime, but the Chieftains recaptured the lead on a touchdown with 9:00 left in the third. St. Joseph grabbed hold of the lead when with 11:00 remaining in the fourth quarter, and never relinquished it.
The result came as a big surprise as Palma came in ranked No. 74 in the MaxPreps Freeman Rankings for California, while SJ was ranked No. 212.

Austin Wahl was the standout player for his team. The senior wide receiver caught one touchdown.
Scotty Cusack was the top performer for the Santa Maria school. The senior running back ran for one touchdown. He has now scored four touchdowns on the season.
The Salinas school's lone touchdown came on a 20-yard pass from undefined to Wahl in the third quarter.
The victory will ease some of the sting of the Knights' close 14-10 loss to the Chieftains last season.
The loss comes after Palma defeated St. Francis 12-7 last week.
Palma (1-1) goes up against Seaside in a non-conference game matchup next week, while St. Joseph (2-1) locks horns with San Luis Obispo in a Pac-7 game.
