The Cardinal Gibbons Crusaders will head out to square off against the Garner Trojans at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Cardinal Gibbons is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.7 runs per game this season.
Cardinal Gibbons is coming in off a wild two-game stretch: after soaring to 15 runs on Friday, they were much more limited against Enloe on Tuesday. They fell 7-2 to the Eagles.
Layce Chappell spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned (and four unearned) runs on six hits and racked up nine Ks.
At the plate, Bridget Mazzo and Avery Robinson did some serious damage despite the final result: Mazzo got on base in all four of her plate appearances with one double and one RBI, while Robinson went a perfect 3-for-3 with one double and one RBI. That's the most hits Robinson has posted since back in April of 2024.
Meanwhile, Garner didn't have quite enough to beat Clayton on Tuesday and fell 5-4. The Trojans have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Garner also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Gabriella Czuczuk gave up three earned (and two unearned) runs on seven hits.
On the hitting side, Gaby Mizelle was cooking despite her team's loss, scoring two runs and stealing Two bases. while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Lily Keefer, who went 3-for-4 with one double and one RBI.
Garner's defeat dropped their record down to 4-4. As for Cardinal Gibbons, their loss dropped their record down to 3-3.
Garner's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Cardinal Gibbons has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9.3 hits per game. It's a different story for Garner, though, as they've been averaging 9.1 hits. Given Cardinal Gibbons' sizable advantage in that area, Garner will need to find a way to close that gap.
Cardinal Gibbons might still be hurting after the 12-3 defeat they got from Garner when the teams last played back in March of 2018. Can Cardinal Gibbons avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
