Baseball Recap: St. Mary Catholic Takes a Loss

St. Mary Catholic had lost three straight on the road, but on Monday they dropped their record down to 4-5 to make it four. They fell just short of the Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah Resorters by a score of 6-5. The Zephyrs were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Resorters apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in May of 2024.

St. Mary Catholic got a good showing from Grant Brazzale, who tossed 2.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. Brazzale is becoming a predictor of the Zephyrs' success: when he allows at most one earned run the team is 2-1 (and 2-4 when he doesn't).

On the hitting side, Joe Pirillo was cooking despite his team's loss, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base. He has become a key player for St. Mary Catholic: the team is 2-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 2-4 otherwise. Mason Wagner was another key player, going 2-for-4 with one triple and one RBI.

As for Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah, they moved to 7-4 with that victory, which also ended their three-game losing streak. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win they have posted since May 27, 2024.

On Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah's side, Ethan Fromm spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered four earned (and one unearned) runs on seven hits and racked up seven Ks. Fromm has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah saw seven different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Sal Viglietti, who went 1-for-4 with three RBI and one double. Those three RBI gave Viglietti a new career-high.

Coming up, St. Mary Catholic will face off against Howards Grove at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah will be paying especially close attention to the Zephyrs' match: after the Zephyrs face off against the Tigers, they'll take on Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah again at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
