The high school football season in Maine came to a close over the weekend with champions crowned in six classes.
Leavitt (Turner) was among the winners, beating
Medomak Valley (Waldoboro) in the Class C state championship game. That victory helped propel the Hornets to the No. 1 ranking in the final MaxPreps Maine Top 25.
Leavitt is one of two Maine high school football programs to finish the 2022 season with a clean 11-0 record. Led by
Noah Carpenter and
Dayton Calder, who accounted for six touchdowns collectively in the title contest, the Hornets bolted out to a 24-0 halftime cushion before claiming a 46-6 triumph.
With longtime head coach Mike Hathaway leading the program, Leavitt claimed its first Class C state title since 2019. The Hornets also won a Class C state championship in 2013 and have produced an 80-18 record over the past decade.
Led by MaxPreps Maine High School Football Player of the Year,
Oxford Hills (South Paris) knocked off defending state champion
Thornton Academy (Saco) 21-7 to claim the No. 2 spot in the final Top 25 after claiming its first Class A state championship.
Soehren threw for 259 yards and scored on a pair of one-yard plunges to exact a little revenge on Thornton Academy, who knocked off the Hornets in last year's title contest.
