The Carrboro Jaguars will face off against the Durham Academy Cavaliers at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. Carrboro is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 11 runs per game this season.
It was a proper cat-fight when Carrboro took on East Chapel Hill on Wednesday. The Jaguars lost 14-3 to the Wildcats. The loss continues a trend for the Jaguars in their meetings with the Wildcats: they've now lost three in a row.
Teagan Fichter was huge no matter where she played even without the win. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 14 batters over 6.1 innings while giving up just one earned (and 12 unearned) runs off four hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in eight consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while going 1-for-3.
Fichter wasn't the only one making solid contact as two players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Julia DeVries, who scored a run while going 1-for-2.
Meanwhile, Durham Academy hadn't done well against Cary Academy recently (they were 0-9 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Tuesday. The Cavaliers walked away with a 9-6 win over the Chargers.
Whitney Wiles and Claire Lynch did most of the damage at the plate: Wiles scored two runs and stole two bases while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances, while Lynch scored a run and stole three bases while going 1-for-3. The team also got some help courtesy of Lillian Dardani, who scored two runs and stole three bases while going 1-for-2.
Durham Academy always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .515. They are 4-1 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Durham Academy is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 5-3 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.6 runs over those games. As for Carrboro, their defeat dropped their record down to 8-3.
Durham Academy's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Carrboro has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9.7 hits per game. It's a different story for Durham Academy, though, as they've been averaging 9.1 hits. Given Carrboro's sizable advantage in that area, the Cavaliers will need to find a way to close that gap.
Carrboro took their win against Durham Academy in their previous matchup back in March of 2017 by a conclusive 11-1 score. Will the Jaguars repeat their success, or do the Cavaliers have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
