Hernando had won three straight at home, but on Friday they bumped up to 3-0 to make it four. They skirted past the Choctaw County Chargers 31-28. The score was all tied up 21-21 at the break, but the Tigers were the better team in the second half.
Hernando found their leader in sophomore Jackson Weathers, who picked up three sacks, forced one fumble, and made six total tackles. The Tigers also relied on Asher Lawson, who's 46-yard boot wound up being the difference in the game. Brady Clancy got in on the action as well, returning a kick for a touchdown.
Hernando didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Shawn Scott and Joseph Newberry. Another thorn in Choctaw County's side was Weathers, who picked up three sacks, forced one fumble, and made six total tackles.
Special teams was a major factor in the game for Hernando, racking up 13 points in total. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Clancy, who ran a kickoff back for a touchdown.
Having lost for the first time this season, Choctaw County fell to 2-1. The loss put an end to their undefeated start to the season.
When it comes to explaining why Choctaw County lost, don't look at Kj Cork. Despite the final result, he threw for 263 yards and two touchdowns, and also rushed for 55 yards on only five carries.
Hernando didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next match, a 38-17 win against Center Hill on the 19th. As for Choctaw County, they have also already played their next contest, a 50-36 victory against Kemper County on the 19th.
