The Wakefield Wolverines waltzed into Saturday's match with two straight wins but they left with three. They walked away with a 50-43 victory over Sanderson. Given Wakefield's advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 25th, while Sanderson is ranked 146th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Wakefield can attribute much of their success to Syncere Burnette, who scored 14 points along with 9 assists and 5 rebounds. That makes it two consecutive games in which Burnette has scored at least 25% of Wakefield's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Taj Boone-Chambers, who scored 10 points along with 5 rebounds.
Several Spartans players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Patrick Dalton, who scored 13 points along with 9 rebounds. Nathan Fife was another key contributor, scoring 13 points.
Wakefield's win bumped their record up to 3-0. As for Sanderson, their loss dropped their record down to 3-1.
Wakefield will be playing in front of their home fans against Cleveland at 7:45 p.m. on Tuesday. Cleveland knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past five games -- so hopefully Wakefield likes a good challenge. As for Sanderson, they will head out on the road to face off against Clayton at 7:45 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Clayton focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 17 last Saturday.
