Basketball Recap: El Capitan Takes a Loss

El Capitan was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their sixth straight defeat. They were four points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 68-64 heartbreaker at the hands of the Monte Vista Monarchs. Sadly, that's the second time they've come up short against the Vaqueros this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 71-37 back in January.

When it comes to explaining why El Capitan lost, don't look at Kale Curo. Despite the final result, he went 11 for 15 on his way to 23 points in addition to six boards and three steals. Those 23 points gave Curo a new career-high. Trystan Billinger was another key player, going 6 of 11 en route to 14 points.

Even though they lost, El Capitan was working as a unit and finished the game with 12 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Monte Vista only posted five assists.

Monte Vista got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Gabriel Alcantar out in front who posted 16 points and six steals. Alcantar is trending in the right direction considering he's improved his point production for three straight games. Another player making a difference was Daesean Jenkins, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and ten rebounds.

El Capitan's loss dropped their record down to 6-19. As for Monte Vista, they are on a roll lately: they've won ten of their last 13 matches, which provided a massive bump to their 14-11 record this season.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. El Capitan has already played their next game (against Rock Academy), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. Monte Vista will take on Steele Canyon at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Steele Canyon will roll in looking for their sixth straight win, something Monte Vista surely won't give up without a fight.
