Basketball Recap: Avalon Comes Up Short

Avalon was the 73-70 winner over Southern Maryland Christian Academy when they last played one another back in February, but their luck changed this time around. The Black Knights took a 76-71 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Mustangs on Thursday.

Despite the loss, Avalon saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Jevon Hawkins went 7-for-11 from beyond the arc en route to 45 points along with five boards and three steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Hawkins has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Toran Ayana, who shot 42% from the field on his way to 14 points and eight rebounds.

Southern Maryland Christian Academy got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Aaron McGlone out in front who went 9-for-16 to rack up 19 points. McGlone's big performance that evening made it seven games in a row in which he has scored at least 17 points. Another player making a difference was Chase Purvis, who made all 6 shots he took to post 12 points in addition to six assists and three steals.

Avalon has traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 3-3 record this season. As for Southern Maryland Christian Academy, their victory ended a five-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 4-2.

Avalon wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 1-0 defeat against St. Albans on the 13th. As for Southern Maryland Christian Academy, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 69-63 win against Severn School on the 13th.
