Amherst County and Liberty are an even 5-5 against one another since January of 2018, but not for long. The Amherst County Lancers will head out on the road to face off against the Liberty Minutemen at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The squads are rolling into the game with opposing streaks: Amherst County has struggled recently with five losses in a row, while Liberty will arrive with four straight wins.
Last Friday, Amherst County suffered a tough 74-53 defeat at the hands of Jefferson Forest. While losing is never fun, Amherst County can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 261st, while Jefferson Forest is ranked 69th).
The losing side was boosted by Cheyenne Wall, who scored 15 points along with six rebounds and two steals. Emmena Awanda was another key contributor, scoring ten points along with eight rebounds.
Meanwhile, everything went Liberty's way against Heritage on Monday as Liberty made off with a 59-33 victory. Liberty pushed the score to 51-18 by the end of the third, a deficit Heritage cut but never quite recovered from.
Amherst County has traveled a rocky road recently having lost eight of their last nine matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 7-14 record this season. As for Liberty, they have been performing well recently as they've won nine of their last 12 matchups, which somehow isn't as good as their 16-5 record this season.
Amherst County ended up a good deal behind Liberty in their previous matchup last Monday, losing 52-36. Can Amherst County avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
