Fairview is a perfect 10-0 against Girard since May of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Wednesday. The Tigers will head out to challenge the Yellowjackets at 4:00 p.m. Fairview is coming into the game hot, having won their last six games.
Fairview came out on top against Conneaut Area on Monday thanks in part to the team's impressive six-run fifth inning. The Tigers were the clear victors by a 12-1 margin over the Eagles. With that win, the Tigers brought their scoring average up to 6.3 runs per game.
Vinny Campoli made a splash while hitting and pitching. He pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one walk in eight consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one home run and five RBI.
In other batting news, Luke Rzodkiewicz and Andrew Stevens did most of the damage at the plate: Rzodkiewicz went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run, while Stevens got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs. Another player making a difference was Tyler Benford, who went 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.
Fairview was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .407. The last time their batting average was this high was back in April.
Meanwhile, after a string of three wins, Girard's good fortune finally ran out on Friday. They lost 14-1 to Greenville. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest loss the Yellowjackets have suffered since April 15th.
Fairview's victory was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 11-3. Those road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.8 runs on average over those games. As for Girard, their defeat dropped their record down to 11-4.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Wednesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Fairview has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 10.6 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Girard struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 9.3 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Fairview was able to grind out a solid victory over Girard in their previous meeting two weeks ago, winning 4-0. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Tigers since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
