The Harlingen Cardinals came tearing into Saturday's contest with 12 straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 18.8 points) and they left with even more momentum. They came out on top against Vela by a score of 72-60. Having run the score up that high, both teams might be doing some extra defensive drills very soon.
Harlingen got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Luis Rodriguez out in front who scored 22 points. Another player making a difference was Andrew Galdamez, who scored 13 points.
Vela lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Jordan Bustamante, who scored 14 points. Jp Olivarez was another key contributor, scoring 11 points.
Harlingen has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 14 of their last 15 contests, which provided a nice bump to their 18-3 record this season. As for Vela, their defeat dropped their record down to 12-5.
Harlingen will look to defend their home court on Tuesday against Pharr-San Juan-Alamo at 7:30 p.m. Pharr-San Juan-Alamo is hoping to put an end to a four-game streak of away losses. As for Vela, they will head out on the road to face off against Sharyland at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Sharyland will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Texas Rankings (they are ranked 1030th, while Vela is ranked 182nd).
