The Willcox Cowboys will challenge the Duncan Wildkats at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Both come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Willcox took a seven-run defeat the last time they faced off against St. Augustine Catholic, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Cowboys sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 4-2 win over the Wolves on Friday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Cowboys have posted since March 7th.
Willcox's win was truly a team effort as four different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Anthony Morales, who scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-4.
Meanwhile, Duncan came tearing into Friday's matchup with four straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 3.5 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They put the hurt on the Vandals with a sharp 10-2 victory. The Wildkats might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won three games by six runs or more this season.
Ethan Hernandez was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run over four innings pitched. Hernandez was also stellar in the batter's box, going 3-for-5 with four RBI, one triple, and one run. He also hit a double, marking his first of the season.
In other batting news, Taygan Jensen was excellent, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-4. Another player making a difference was Guy Riedhead, who scored two runs while going 1-for-2.
Duncan kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in five consecutive contests.
Duncan's win was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 6-2. The road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.5 runs on average over those games. As for Willcox, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a massive bump to their 6-9-1 record this season.
