5A West recap October 8, 2013
Alma scored a shocking upset when it eliminated Morrilton, 22-14. At the time, the Devil Dogs were ranked 14th in the state, while the Airedales were 31st.
Alma was able to crack the Top 25 in the state rankings this week after topping Morrilton. Doug Loughridge's team came in at 23 in the state poll after placing at number 31 last week.
Cole Shaw was a key player and the best on defense this week as Greenbrier topped Harrison. The 5-foot-7 junior pulled down 1 interception and racked up 1 sack.
Daniel Shimer was a beast in the backfield as Shiloh Christian beat Vilonia.
Shimer was a passing and rushing force as the Saints bested the Eagles. He completed 9 passes for 213 yards and 3 touchdowns and also ran for 249 yards. Shimer's favorite target this week was Reed Lowe, who caught 5 passes for 125 yards.
Will Drewry threw for 371 yards and 4 touchdowns. He went 23-34 with 0 interceptions.
Drewry put up the best numbers in passing as the Panthers beat the Goblins. Drewry's favorite target this week was Dustin Tims, who caught 7 passes for 145 yards.
5-foot-10 quarterback Drewry of Greenbrier is the league leader in passing yards this season with 1,693. He has also thrown 20 touchdowns. The leading receiver in the league this season is Rayshod Criswell. The Morrilton star has 41 catches for 536 yards.
The top two teams in 5A West will face off this week when first place Morrilton takes on second place Greenbrier. Last week, Cody McNabb's team fell to the Airedales, while Randy Tribble's team bested Harrison.
One of the league's premier quarterbacks will face off with its top pass rusher when the Panthers and the Devil Dogs face off next week.
Clarksville was the team that made the biggest jump in the rankings, moving from eighth to sixth in the league. The Panthers defeated Huntsville 21-14 earlier in the week.
