The Newton-Conover Red Devils's 25-5 record from last season is now well into the rear view mirror after another tough outing. They were dealt a 54-23 defeat at the hands of Ashe County on Thursday. While losing is never fun, Newton-Conover can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 466th, while Ashe County is ranked 214th).
Hadleigh Swagger was Newton-Conover's leading scorer, having posted ten points.
Sara Sain held things down on the boards with eight rebounds. She took the lead distributing the ball, coming up with four assists.
Newton-Conover's defeat dropped their record down to 1-7. As for Ashe County, their win ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 5-5.
Newton-Conover and Alexander Central will round out the year against one another at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday at. Alexander Central will be coming into the contest with an undefeated record on the line. Ashe County will finish 2023 at home by hosting North Davidson at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday.
