Desert View and Buena are an even 5-5 against one another since March of 2019, but likely not for long. The Jaguars will head out on the road to face off against the Colts at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Desert View is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7 runs per game this season.
Desert View is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. They put the hurt on Nogales with a sharp 22-3 win on Wednesday. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Jaguars.
Sophia Garza made a splash no matter where she played. She didn't allow a single earned run over four innings pitched. Garza was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring four runs while going 1-for-3. The dominant performance also gave her a new career-high in RBI (two).
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Leia Switzer, who went 4-for-5 with nine RBI, four runs, and two doubles. Those two doubles gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Mariah Rodriguez, who got on base in all five of her plate appearances with three runs, one triple, and one RBI.
Desert View always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .667. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Nogales only posted an OBP of .350.
Meanwhile, Buena came up short against Casa Grande on Monday and fell 19-14. The Colts have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Hailey Larson led a balanced group of hitters, going 3-for-5 with six RBI, two doubles, and one run. Morgan Smith was another key player, going 3-for-6 with three runs, four RBI, and one double.
The victory got Desert View back to even at 9-9. As for Buena, their loss dropped their record down to 5-18.
Tuesday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Desert View hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .318. However, it's not like Buena struggles in that department as they've averaged .324. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Desert View was able to grind out a solid win over Buena in their previous matchup back in April of 2024, winning 8-3. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Jaguars since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
