Bruce and Vardaman are an even 5-5 against one another since February of 2020, but likely not for long. The Bruce Trojans will face off against the Vardaman Rams at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Both come into the game bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Bruce is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. They put the hurt on Houlka with a sharp 22-1 victory on Monday. The win continues a trend for the Trojans in their matchups with the Wildcats: they've now won nine in a row.
Sammie Gunter made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over three innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits (and only one walk). That's the fewest earned runs she has allowed since back in March of 2024. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while getting on base in two of her four plate appearances. That run was her first of the season.
In other batting news, Bruce got a massive performance out of Sadie Box, who scored three runs and stole Four bases. while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances. That's the most runs Box has posted since back in March of 2024. Leah Clark was another key player, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with one home run, three runs, and four RBI.
Bruce hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Houlka struck out eight times.
Meanwhile, it was close, but on Friday Vardaman sidestepped Bruce for a 9-7 victory. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Rams have posted against the Trojans since March 20, 2021.
Addi Lucius spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered five earned (and two unearned) runs on 11 hits and racked up six Ks.
At the plate, Vardaman let Maggie Edmondson and Haley Parker run wild. Edmondson scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-4, while Parker scored a run and stole Two bases. while going 2-for-4. Another player making a difference was Makayla Johnson, who scored a run while going 2-for-4.
Vardaman's victory bumped their record up to 4-2. As for Bruce, their win bumped their record up to 3-6.
Bruce couldn't quite finish off Vardaman in their previous matchup on Friday and fell 9-7. Can Bruce avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
