Fremont extended their losing streak to three on Thursday, dropping them down to 11-9. They came up short against the Mountain View Spartans, falling 10-2. That's two games in a row now that the Firebirds have lost by exactly eight runs.
Jiyah Caban was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. On the mound, she pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off five hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-2 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Caban wasn't the only one making solid contact as three players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Natalia Bracken, who went 1-for-2 with one run.
As for Mountain View, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four games. That's provided a massive bump to their 10-15 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games.
Like Fremont, Mountain View also got a great game from a two-way player: Phoebe Tobias. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 12 batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off three hits (and only one walk). Tobias was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-5 with one triple and one run.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Riley Anderson, who went 3-for-4 with four RBI, one triple, and one double. Those three hits gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Leilani Tanielu, who went 1-for-4 with two runs, one double, and one RBI.
Fremont does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Mountain View, they will challenge Los Gatos at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. The Spartans' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Wildcats have averaged an impressive 7.9 runs per game this season.
