The Discovery Canyon Thunder entered their tilt with the Elizabeth Cardinals with three consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with four. Discovery Canyon walked away with a 49-40 win over Elizabeth on Friday. Given Discovery Canyon's advantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 84th, while Elizabeth is ranked 251st), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Discovery Canyon found their leader in underclassman Hugh Tarpenning, who dropped a double-double on 19 points and ten rebounds. Tarpenning set a new season high mark in blocks with seven. The team also got some help courtesy of Nick Martidis, who scored eight points along with five rebounds and four steals.
When it comes to explaining why Elizabeth lost, one person who can't be blamed is Cooper Connelley. Despite the final result, he dropped a double-double on 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Discovery Canyon has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six contests, which provided a nice bump to their 7-3 record this season. As for Elizabeth, they are on a six-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 2-8.
Discovery Canyon will head out on the road to face off against Liberty at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Elizabeth, they have the luxury of staying home another game and will welcome Palmer Ridge at 7:00 p.m. on January 9th. Hopefully Palmer Ridge focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 12 on Thursday.
