After both having extra time off, the Thompson Valley Eagles and the Mountain View Mountain Lions will shake off the cobwebs and take on one another at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Thompson Valley's defense has only allowed 22.7 points per game this season, so Mountain View's offense will have their work cut out for them.
Thompson Valley saw some tournament action two weeks ago. They walked away with a 31-21 victory over Longmont. Given the Eagles' advantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 69th, while the Trojans are ranked 204th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Thompson Valley to victory, but perhaps none more so than Jesika Hopkins, who posted ten points. Another player making a difference was Mekayla Macias, who had ten points and eight steals.
Meanwhile, Mountain View was not able to break out of their rough patch two weeks ago as the team picked up their third straight loss. They came up short against Loveland, falling 67-47.
Thompson Valley will have to keep a close watch on Ellie Roberts and Marlene Carrillo, a pair of players who had a big impact on Mountain View's prior game. Roberts went 9 of 13 on her way to 20 points and six rebounds, while Carrillo dropped a double-double on 14 points and 17 boards. With that strong performance, Carrillo is now averaging an impressive 8.1 rebounds per game.
Even though they lost, Mountain View smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 11 offensive rebounds in four consecutive contests.
Mountain View's defeat dropped their record down to 3-5. As for Thompson Valley, they have been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six games, which provided a nice bump to their 7-2 record this season.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Thompson Valley has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 32.3 boards per game. However, it's not like Mountain View struggles in that department as they've been averaging 30.5 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Thompson Valley might still be hurting after the 50-27 loss they got from Mountain View in their previous matchup back in February of 2024. Thankfully for Thompson Valley, Addison Branscum (who dropped a double-double on 24 points and ten rebounds) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result?
