The Yuma Criminals will take on the Westview Knights at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Yuma is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.6 runs per game this season.
Last Thursday, Yuma got the win against Dysart by a conclusive 9-2. The victory continues a trend for the Criminals in their matchups with the Demons: they've now won six in a row.
Ethen Schmidgall looked comfortable as he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out six over four innings pitched.
At the plate, Alonzo Fierro was excellent, scoring two runs while going 2-for-3. Another player making a difference was Andres Ortiz, who scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-3.
Yuma always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .583. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Dysart only posted an OBP of .259.
Meanwhile, Westview was able to grind out a solid win over Combs on Saturday, taking the game 8-5.
Rodrigo Gaytan made a splash no matter where he played. He tossed four innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off two hits. He has become a key player for Westview: the team is undefeated when he allows at most three hits, but 4-10 otherwise. Gaytan was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one triple and one RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Jordan Perez, who scored two runs while going 2-for-3. Westview is 5-1 when Perez posts two or more runs, but 3-9 otherwise. Ramses Galindo was another key player, scoring a run while going 1-for-1.
Yuma's victory was their 11th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 14-5-1. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.7 runs on average over those games. As for Westview, their victory bumped their record up to 8-10.
Westview's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Yuma hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .324. It's a different story for Westview, though, as they've only averaged .255. Will they be able to contain Yuma's hitters?
