Dayton (Ore.) saw its 15-point lead dwindle to nine, but still managed to hang on and defeat
Willamina (Ore.) 21-12 on Saturday.
After taking the lead on a touchdown run by
Forrest Garcia in the second quarter, the Pirates led 7-0 at the half.
Dayton expanded its lead to eight points entering the fourth quarter. DHS's lone score in the quarter came on a Garcia touchdown run.
With the win the Pirates extended their winning streak to eight games. Dayton defeated the Cougars 55-6 last week.
Trevor Hunt made a difference for the Bulldogs. The senior quarterback ran for one touchdown. His performance brought his touchdown total to seven on the year.
DHS's standout player in the win was Garcia. The senior wide receiver ran for two touchdowns.
The Pirates had given up an average of 10.4 points prior to the contest. Willamina's 12 points were well below its season average of 31.4 per game.
Dayton also won the meeting between the two teams last season, 42-14.
In its next matchup WHS (5-3) will take on Gervais in a 3A West Valley game. The Cougars go into the week with a record of 1-7.
